The World Health Organisation has made a list of diseases and symptoms for which the therapeutic effect of acupuncture is shown:

  • Side effects of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Depression
  • Pain: facial pain, headaches, knee pain, lower back pain, neck pain, toothache, post-operative pain, sore throat, acute pain, cancer pain, abdominal pain, earache, fibromyalgia, renal colic, biliary colic.
  • Hypertension (essential)
  • Hypotension (primary)
  • Loco motoric system: Periarteritis of the shoulder, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, sprains, tennis elbow, gout, arthritis, and pseudo radicular pain syndrome, stiff neck
  • Urogenital system: Urinary retention, recurrent lower urinary tract infection, urolithiasis, female urethral syndrome, male sexual dysfunction (non-structural), chronic prostatitis
  • Dermatology: acne vulgaris, neurodermatitis, itching
  • Addictions: opium, cocaine and heroin addiction, tobacco addiction, alcohol addiction and detoxification
  • Neurological disorders: Bell’s palsy, neuralgia (post-herpetic), vascular dementia, stroke
  • Digestive system: chronic cholecystitis (acute exacerbations), gallstones, peptic ulcers, acute/chronic gastritis, chronic ulcerative colitis, nausea and vomiting, dysentery
  • non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
  • Gynaecology and pregnancy: infertility, hypo-ovarionism, lactation (deficiency), pain during childbirth, Stein-Leventhal syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, childbirth trigger, nausea, turning a breech of the foetus, postnatal depression
  • Insomnia
  • Post-operative recovery
  • Head: temporomandibular joint dysfunction, nosebleeds, Meniere’s disease
